Back to school (ages 2–8): a 14-day plan without war at home
Ages 2–8 · 14-day plan · 14-day routine · CognixHub
Home does not return to normal after holidays because someone “explains better.” It returns because the body recognises a sequence again. This article is the field frame behind the 14-day routine pack for ages 2–8: four anchors, sleep shifted gently, mornings with buffer, door goodbyes that stay short.
The problem
Families often try to fix everything on Sunday night: earlier bedtime by an hour, new extracurriculars, a speech about “school mode.” The child’s body still runs on holiday timing. Result: rebound nights, morning auctions, door meltdowns, and adult shame.
Goal: one focus per day · sequence > spoken clock · still-in-time recovery even if school already started.
The four anchors
- Meals — stable windows (±15 min), max two closed options.
- Rest/nap or quiet room — protect the afternoon tank.
- Bedtime — move +15 minutes earlier every 2 days until the realistic target.
- Outdoor movement — even 15 minutes counts; don’t replace it with three new clubs in week one.
14-day logic (compressed)
- Week 0: pick target bedtime, prep two outfits, write a 3-line door script, print morning/night boards.
- Days 1–2: morning light + first sleep shift.
- Days 3–5: leave-home song · hold the sleep block · fixed door goodbye.
- Days 6–9: stop-play song · mid-plan movement · hug-before-questions · bedtime song.
- Days 10–14: morning buffer · protect the calendar · consolidate sleep · repeat the best day.
“On holiday the body ran on another schedule. Now we return to our usual order — a little at a time.”
Don’t
- Don’t advance sleep 30–60 minutes in one night unless you accept rebound risk.
- Don’t celebrate with a loud late movie that undoes the sleep block.
- Don’t confuse this with a teen intervention pack — different age, different tool.
